I have too much time on my hands:

another doctor visit

On Friday I took Andrew to the doctor for another asthma checkup. He has a cough, and with it came the asthma symptoms again. The problem this time is that his inhaler didn't seem to be helping much, if at all. His doctor did a nebulizer treatment for him then checked him for pneumonia. He had to listen to him for quite a while because he though he heard it, but luckily when he coughed it went away and if it was pneumonia it wouldn't have gone away. Thankfully! He did however, have to take one dose of a steroid. This is because his airways were constricted/swollen already and then when the asthma hit, the airways got even smaller. His inhaler only cleared up the asthma attach so it really wasn't helping as much as he needed it to. The steroid made a huge difference - he slept through the night and hasn't even needed his inhaler!

As I was trying to get a picture of us, he snuck a piece of gum. Can you tell he loves it?

He's starting to get freckles! They're so cute!

Starting to get bored...

To finish up, we had lunch at McDonalds. Andrew asked for an ice cream cone (which he's never done before) and asked to sit up at the high table since Mason wasn't with us.

balloons

We got these cool balloons from grandpa.

What's so cool about them you might ask? Well, if I'm not a huge nerd and don't use my flash... you'd see how cool they are. (Although I like this picture, plus it show that they're just white balloons).

They came with little flashing lights for each one. We turned off the hallway lights and the boys had a blast!

Andrew shocked me today. I pulled out these letters to work with him on his name and when I asked him to put them in order, he did it without hesitation. Then when I asked him to spell it, he did it (except for E which took him some time to get for some reason, but I think he has it now). At the end of the day, Matt wanted to see him do it and this time he spelled his name without needing to look at the letters (including E). It's so fun to watch him learn new things. I love it!

almost 2

Mason is slowly turning into a two year old... His personality is showing through more and more and he is starting to have favorite toys and games, etc. Here are a few of his new adorable things.

1. He asks 'where' - mainly when he wants to see our neighbor dogs. It is a little confusing - we can hear them all the time but he never gets to see them. :)

2. He likes his Handy Manny tools. And I think it's fun that he can match all their shapes.

3. He drives the gator on his own already. He doesn't know how to steer, but he's got the gas figured out.

4. He is interacting with things/people. We'll have little conversations now (mainly a 'yeah' or 'no' along with some pointing and made up words, but we talk!) and today he played with this little dog of his for quite a while. He hugged him and gave him a kiss and when the 'if you're happy and you know it, clap your hands' song came on he clapped his hands!

today was sunny; Mason was not

Mason has been struggling with excess snot and it seems he might have a slight earache now. Last night he woke up and couldn't get back to sleep and ended up snuggling with me for the night. This morning he was still having a tough time, so I decided to stay home and enjoy the sunshine from here.

A while ago (because I was out of ideas) I asked Andrew if he wanted to mix some stuff and make something disgusting. I guess it was a hit because today he asked to make something disgusting. Sweet. And, just for the record, 'disgusting' is water, flour, salt, oatmeal, coffee beans and a lasagna noodle... :)

A recap of Mason's day:

A bit before lunch, Mason had a little meltdown and I couldn't get him to stop crying. I finally decided to sit him on the couch to see if he'd relax and it worked. Andrew told me he'd watch a show with Mason if he that's what he wanted, so Andrew took a spot on the couch and we turned on a show. Mason is still not at all interested in tv, so when he sat still for the show, it confirmed he wasn't feeling well.

Then he fell asleep.

And then he woke up happy as can be and enjoyed the rest of his night. Here's hoping for a good night and a healthy kid in the morning!

first ride on the gator

The battery to our gator died toward the end of last summer. Matt tracked down a battery and fixed it up today. The boys had a blast!

Mason wasn't so sure about the it for the first few seconds.

But then Andrew explained that it's awesome, and he understood. :0)

Mason's turn to drive. And by 'drive' I mean sit in the drivers seat. He didn't steer or press the gas (until the end).

Cute!

This about sums up their drive... They're still on the gator here, but I almost missed them because they were cruisin' so fast.

running*

*Warning... This is mainly a post for me to track my running progress in case I ever care to look back on it.

I have never been a runner in my life. Seriously. Even in high school PE I didn't run the mile. It wasn't until 2003 when I joined Weight Watchers (thanks, Jeannette) that I started to take my health serious. Even after I started working out regularly, I still couldn't run. I finally decided to start small and work my way up. (I had to train to get to a mile!). I'm now running 2 miles at about an 11 minute pace and I'm really starting to love it. I want to do a race, mainly because it seems like the cool thing to do, so now I'm trying to learn how to run outside. I ran an 11:40 mile on my first try. Today I tried again and cut off over a minute. Grrr! I need to learn how to find my pace outside that I do on the treadmill. Don't worry, I'll try a couple more times before I give up. :)

My goal is to finish the first race I do (and possibly only race - I'm not that competitive, it just seems like something I should check off my imaginary lifetime to-do list). To be realistic, I should start with a 5k. However, a friend of mine has a son who was diagnosed with diabetes in December and she is putting together Team Zane for Beat the Bridge (a race that raises money for juvenile diabetes). I think it'd be cool if this was my first race but there are two things that make me nervous. 1. I have to run a 10 minute mile for the first 2 miles in order to beat the bridge, and 2. it's an 8k! I have to decide soon if I can do it. If not, I'll at least walk with Team Zane. I can walk an 8k...

happy birthday Easton & Owen!

We celebrated Easton & Owen's 2nd birthday today with a Toy Story bowling party! Cute!! It was also Mason's first time bowling, so there might be a few pictures of him enjoying his big day.

I thought it was funny that I had two pictures of Mason and our legs. :) And both are adorable, if I may say so.

something other than superheros

Today, not only did we get a few hours of sun, but I also got a break from superheros! Andrew has been hooked on Cars this week and today that was the main thing we played with.

The sun showed up around 2:00 this afternoon. The late afternoon sun is one of my favorite things about the beginning of spring! I love today.

thief!

Mason grabbed the loaf of French bread that was left over after dinner and took off. He thought he was hilarious!

He's lucky he's cute. (playing peek-a-boo this morning).

we're almost famous

The photographer we used for our family pictures last summer, Sylvia Cook, used our family picture in her blurb about the types of photos she takes. We're the little thumbnail to represent families. How fun!

we got that lady again

I had a randomly productive day today. We got Andrew's haircut, played at a park, did a fun messy craft project, played with just about every toy we own, watched a movie, played outside some more, took a nap, planned dinner, and did a ton of laundry by 3:30. Seriously? I'm not sure if I have the (on/off/on/off) sunny spring day to thank or if it's all because I decided to shower this morning. :)

The place I go to get Andrew's haircut seems to have about 3 ladies who work there and we seem to rotate through them. The lady we got today always asks if it's okay to spike and color Andrew's hair. Today she did a red mohawk and it actually looked pretty cool.

delicious!

I made the yummiest dinner of my 10 years of cooking tonight. Here's the recipe (altered, because although I think you'll enjoy it, this is for me to be able to find again, and I didn't follow the directions 100%).

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of white bread, toasted, crust removed

  • 3 tablespoons crumbled blue cheese

  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives

  • pepper

  • oil

  • 4 - 3 oz center-cut beef tenderloin

  1. Preheat oven to 400

  2. Crumble toast into bowl with blue cheese, chives and pepper and blend to coarse paste

  3. Spray roasting pan with nonstick spray. Heat a large, nonstick skillet over high heat. Sear steak until just browned (about 1 minute per side)

  4. Arrange steak on roasting rack. Coat the top of each steak with the blue cheese mixture. Roast until the crust is golden brown and the meat is done to taste. It says 3 - 4 min is medium rare but ours were in 15 - 2o min to get to medium.

Part of what made this so delicious is the type of steak I bought. I have never had a more tender steak in my life - so don't scrimp on the steak! It's also a Weight Watchers meal! I think the only thing that makes it WW is the size of the steak. It was seriously the best thing I've ever made.

ww

I am starting back with my old friend, Weight Watchers, tomorrow. I'm so tired of gaining and losing the same 10 pounds - I'm recommitting to be healthy(er).

My hope is that by sharing updates on here, it'll keep it fresh in my mind so I don't accidentally eat everything I can get my hands on. I might decide I don't want to share my stupid weight loss/gain/loss/gain with you all, but if I do, it will be titled 'ww'. Please feel free to skip over it if you're not interested in my weight. :)

One thing I love about Weight Watchers is that their cookbooks are filled with delicious recipes. I usually alter them to make them not so non-fat this and wheat that, but they're still healthy, light and delicious. If I come across any great ones, I'll be sure to share them here as well.
